2016 marked the first year that the Invitational Regatta was aligned with the Canada Day / Independence Day weekend. The festivities were bookended by a causual pursuit race on Friday and South Port Sailing Club’s Sailabration on Sunday afternoon. With Domino’s Pizza (Manning Rd.) and Frank Brewing Company supplying the pizza and beer on Saturday night, and Dan’s Nautical Shop sponsoring the breakfast on Sunday morning, the weekend not only offered competitive racing, but also a fantastic social atmosphere at a very economical price!
In terms of the sailing, the Friday evening ‘long distance course’ saw relatively consistent winds in the range of 8 to 10 knots.
On Sunday, the winds were light and variable; however, they did fill in by the second race to create some beautiful sailing conditions.
Kelly Johnson (PHRF B), Roger Renaud (PHRF C) and Jim Halpin (JOG) each walked away with their respective divisions recording 1st place finishes in each of their races.
In PHRF A, on the other hand, Wesley Arthur having posted a 1st place finish on Saturday night, was narrowly able to hold on to his lead over John Marentette, who captured two consecutive bullets on Sunday.
